Understanding the River Level Graphs The graphs provided in this display rotate every 20 seconds. The data are obtained from four locations on the Avon River that form part of the Department of Water's river monitoring facility. We have prepared this special format as a service to the community and to specifically help all the competitors and spectators of the Avon Descent. River levels in the graphs are presented in a special datum called Standard Level. This is established by initially applying a level of 10 metres to the river bed at the measuring point. All levels are thus reported relative to this 10 metre reference. That is, 10 metres and above. Hence, a reading of 10.25 at Northam means there is 250 mm of water flowing over the weir at Northam. To see this and more river level information, you can access the Department of Water's internet site at www.water.wa.gov.au These pages are designed for 1024 by 768 screen resolution.
